PRF Microneedling: What Is It and How Does It Work?
PRF microneedling combines the collagen-stimulating benefits of microneedling, also called microchanneling, with platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) prepared from your own blood. The tiny channels that we create during treatment are used to apply PRF, which contains platelets, fibrin and naturally occurring growth factors involved in tissue repair. We love this combination microneedling with PRF because it can enhance skin rejuvenation, improve texture and support your skin's natural healing process. This all leads to restoring your youthful beauty.
At Muse Medical Artistry in Aurora, Colorado, we offer microchanneling with PRF for patients who want smoother, healthier-looking skin without dramatically changing their appearance. With six years of experience performing PRF treatments, I've seen why choosing the right technique and personalizing treatment to each patient's skin are so important.

What Is Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)?
PRF is a concentrated, biologic material obtained from a small sample of your own blood. We draw your blood and process it in a centrifuge, which separates the blood into different components. The PRF contains platelets, fibrin and growth factors that participate in your body's natural healing processes. Unlike commercially manufactured skin-care serums, PRF comes directly from your own body.
Growth factors are signaling proteins involved in cellular communication and tissue repair. Fibrin provides a natural framework that participates in healing. These properties are why PRF has attracted interest in regenerative aesthetic treatments, including skin rejuvenation and hair restoration.
How Does PRF Work With Microchanneling?
If you've read my other articles, you know that microchanneling uses very fine needles to create controlled microscopic channels in the skin. These channels stimulate the body's natural healing response, including collagen production and remodeling.
At Muse, we incorporate PRF into this process for better, more enhanced results. After preparing your PRF, we apply it during the microchanneling procedure so it can interact with the freshly treated skin. The treatment combines two complementary approaches:
Microchanneling creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen remodeling.
PRF supplies patient-derived platelets, fibrin and naturally occurring growth factors that may help support the tissue-repair process.
This is why I like combining the two treatments. Rather than relying on mechanical collagen stimulation alone, we're incorporating components of your body's own healing system into the procedure.
If you're unfamiliar with the technique, our article "Microneedling vs. Microchanneling: What's the Difference?" explains how we perform microchanneling at Muse.
Why Add PRF to Microchanneling?
One question our patients often ask is whether adding PRF makes microchanneling more effective. Our experience is that the potential advantage is that PRF introduces additional biologically active components into a treatment already designed to stimulate skin repair. For patients seeking facial rejuvenation, the combination may offer several benefits.
Improved Skin Texture and Appearance
Microchanneling stimulates collagen remodeling, which can gradually improve uneven skin texture, fine lines and certain acne scars. Adding PRF may further support the tissue-repair environment, making it an appealing option for patients concerned about overall skin quality.
Support for Natural Skin Healing
PRF contains growth factors associated with tissue repair. Incorporating it during microchanneling may support the skin's healing response following treatment. However, while early research is promising, clinical evidence has not conclusively established that PRF produces better results or faster recovery than microneedling alone for every patient.
Rejuvenation Using Your Own Blood Components
Many patients have said they appreciate that PRF is prepared from their own blood rather than a commercially manufactured growth-factor product. The objective is to encourage healthier-looking skin through natural biological processes, without adding facial volume or changing facial contours. The goal is improvement in your skin's quality, not changing what makes you look like you.
What Can You Expect After PRF Microchanneling?
Most patients experience temporary redness, warmth or sensitivity following microchanneling, similar to a sunburn. PRF treatments have minimal downtime, with most patients experiencing mild redness that resolves within a few days. Mild swelling or dryness can also occur.
Recovery varies depending on the treatment intensity and your individual skin.
Although your skin may look refreshed after the initial healing period, visible collagen remodeling takes time. Improvements in texture and fine lines generally develop gradually over the weeks following your PRF treatment. Some patients benefit from a series of treatments, depending on their skin concerns and desired results.
Is PRF Microchanneling Right for You?
PRF microchanneling may be worth considering if you're concerned about fine lines, acne scars, enlarged-looking pores, uneven texture or overall skin rejuvenation. We also offer other PRF treatments for concerns such as facial rejuvenation and hair thinning. You can learn more on our PRF Treatments page.
Not everyone needs the same treatment. During your consultation, we'll discuss your goals, evaluate your skin and determine whether microchanneling with PRF is an appropriate choice.
